About this site

What it is, who made it, and how to use it

Puzzles is a small, free site about puzzles: the classic ones, played on the page, and the mathematics that explains them. It belongs to Mars – your new home, a calm, imagined city on Mars that its owner is building to share with students and friends, and it sits beside the sister sites Algorithms, Math and Cryptography.

AI-created

Every page here was written by an AI, and the playable puzzles and the banner picture were programmed by an AI. That is why each page carries a small AI-created tag. The facts were checked against the books and papers listed, closed, at the end of each page; if you find a mistake, it is a mistake of ours, and the repository is open for corrections.

How a page is built

  1. Try it. Each page starts with the puzzle itself: on the page when it can be played, in words when it can't.
  2. How to think about it. The idea that cracks the puzzle, in plain words.
  3. Why it works. The mathematics, kept short.
  4. Going deeper. Closed boxes with proofs, variations and history, for those who want more.
  5. Sources. Closed at the end of the page.

Answers are always closed, so you choose when to look. The pages are short, five or six minutes each; a long page splits into parts you move through with the bar at the bottom. The Aa button in the header changes the text size and the light.

Nothing is collected

The puzzles run in your browser. Nothing you do on this site is saved on a server or sent anywhere, and there is no sign-in.

Levels

The badge under each title uses the same three levels as the sister sites. Beginner: no background needed, good for young readers and classes. Intermediate: comfortable with school math. Expert: the page reaches university mathematics or current research.
